Epiphany
A sudden moment of insight or realization that changes a character’s understanding.
An epiphany is a flash of clarity in which a character grasps a truth about self, others, or life. Writers often place epiphanies near a story’s end to crystallize its theme. The realization may be painful or liberating, but it marks a turning point in awareness.
Example
At the closing of the bazaar, the boy suddenly sees his romantic quest as vanity and feels a burning shame, a classic Joycean epiphany.
