Stream of Consciousness

A style that tries to capture the continuous flow of a character’s thoughts and impressions.

Stream of consciousness mimics the loose, associative movement of the mind, often loosening grammar and logical order. Writers use it to render inner life with raw immediacy, showing how perception, memory, and feeling overlap. It can immerse readers deeply while demanding more interpretive effort.

Example

The boy’s drifting, feverish reflections on the girl and the bazaar approach stream of consciousness, tracing his longing as it rises and collapses.
