Character

Hubris

Excessive pride or overconfidence that leads a character to overreach and fall.

Hubris is arrogance that blinds a character to their limits, often provoking downfall or divine punishment. Writers use it as a common form of tragic flaw, dramatizing the danger of defying human or moral boundaries. The proud figure’s certainty is precisely what dooms them.

Example

Victor Frankenstein’s conviction that he can master life and death drives him to create a being he cannot control, and his pride costs him everyone he loves.
