Tragic Hero
A protagonist of high standing whose downfall arises largely from their own flaw or error.
A tragic hero is admirable enough to command sympathy yet flawed enough to fall, so their ruin feels both earned and moving. Writers use the figure to explore how strengths can curdle into weaknesses. Their fate is meant to stir pity and fear in the audience.
Example
Macbeth begins as a valiant soldier but lets ambition drive him to murder and tyranny, falling by the very drive that first raised him.
