  1. The peacemaker At the Dublin by Lamplight laundry, Maria serves the barmbracks she has sliced and laughs off talk of getting the ring.
  2. Cakes in town Maria rides the tram to the Pillar and buys penny cakes at Downes’s and a slice of plumcake in Henry Street.
  3. The polite gentleman On the Drumcondra tram, an elderly gentleman with a greyish moustache makes room for her and chats with her.
  4. The missing plumcake At Joe’s house, Maria cannot find her plumcake and nearly cries at the thought that she left it on the tram.
  5. A word for Alphy When Maria speaks up for Alphy, Joe swears he will never speak to his brother again, and a row is narrowly avoided.
  6. The saucers Blindfolded in the Hallow Eve game, Maria touches a soft, wet substance that is thrown out, and on her second try she gets the prayer-book.
  7. The repeated verse Maria sings I Dreamt that I Dwelt, repeats the first verse in place of the second, and Joe is moved to tears.
