Paradox
A statement that seems self-contradictory yet reveals an underlying truth.
A paradox holds two opposing ideas together in a way that, on reflection, makes sense. Writers use it to provoke thought, capture complex truths, and resist easy interpretation. The apparent contradiction forces readers to look past the surface for deeper meaning.
Example
Louise grieves yet feels free after hearing of her husband’s death, a paradox that reveals how love and confinement can coexist in a marriage.
