Bildungsroman

A coming-of-age narrative tracing a character’s growth from youth toward maturity.

A bildungsroman follows a protagonist’s psychological and moral development, often through hardship, error, and self-discovery. Writers use the form to explore how experience shapes identity and values. The journey typically ends with the character arriving at a more mature understanding of the world.

Example

Though only a short story, Araby captures a bildungsroman moment, tracing a boy’s passage from romantic illusion to a sobering glimpse of adult disappointment.
